A newly discovered virus specifically aims at Android phones, surreptitiously extracting call records, passwords, and other highly sensitive user data.
An alarming virus has set its sights on Android phones, infiltrating call records, pilfering passwords, and compromising other valuable user data. The government has issued a warning regarding this emerging threat.
The Indian government has released a cautionary advisory regarding the 'Daam' malware, capable of infecting Android phones. This malicious software possesses the ability to illicitly access multiple aspects of your device, including call records, contacts, browsing history, and even your camera. The advisory has been issued by the national cybersecurity agency, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).
As per the advisory, the 'Daam' virus possesses the ability to circumvent antivirus programs, rendering its detection and removal challenging. Additionally, it has the capability to deploy ransomware, a form of malicious software that locks devices and demands payment to regain access. Typically, the virus spreads through third-party websites or applications obtained from untrustworthy or unfamiliar sources.
Upon infiltrating an Android phone, the 'Daam' virus actively seeks to elude the device's security measures. Subsequently, it manages to obtain unauthorized access to highly sensitive information, including call records and history stored on the compromised device.
The advisory issued by the government highlights that the 'Daam' virus possesses the capability to breach phone call recordings, access contacts, manipulate device passwords, and even compromise the camera functionality. Moreover, it can capture screenshots, pilfer text messages (SMSes), download and upload files, and transmit the stolen data to a remote command-and-control server.
Compounding the situation, the malware employs an advanced encryption algorithm known as AES to encrypt files present on the targeted device. Consequently, other files within the device's storage are erased, leaving behind solely the encrypted files marked with a ".enc" extension. Moreover, a ransom note titled "readme_now.txt" might be exhibited to the user.
In order to safeguard against such risks, the cybersecurity agency recommends refraining from visiting untrusted websites or clicking on suspicious links. It is advisable to maintain updated antivirus software on your device. The advisory also suggests exercising caution when encountering unfamiliar phone numbers, as scammers frequently conceal their true identities through email-to-text services. Legitimate SMS messages from banks typically utilize a sender ID containing the bank's abbreviated name instead of a phone number.
Lastly, it is essential for users to exercise heightened caution when dealing with shortened URLs, particularly those that utilize 'bitly' or 'tinyurl' hyperlinks. These URLs have the potential to redirect users to malicious websites, and thus, should be approached with caution.
By adhering to these precautions, you can effectively safeguard your Android phone from the 'Daam' malware and similar threats. This proactive approach will help ensure the security of your personal information and the integrity of your device.
